Why Culture Matters in Bad Times?

Markt 10, 04109 Leipzig

In times of war and crisis, literature may seem powerless. Yet it is precisely under the harshest conditions that the written word reveals its greatest strength. Ukrainian author and literary critic Ostap Slyvynsky presents his poignant work Words in Wartime („Wörter im Krieg“) a collection of voices from people enduring the war in Ukraine, giving shape to their experiences and preserving their truths.
In the accompanying public lecture, Slyvynsky explores the crucial role of literature and culture in the face of violence and despair. Why speak when silence seems easier? Because literature gives voice to what cannot be said. It connects people, preserves memory, provides comfort — and reminds us of our shared humanity in the darkest of times.
Dr. Ostap Slyvynsky, born in 1978 in Lviv, is a poet, translator, essayist, and literary critic. He teaches at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv, Member of PEN Ukraine.
